This course provides comprehensive training in the reading, interpretation, and estimation of plumbing and fire protection projects following the technical standards and codes used in the United States. It prepares students to join teams involved in the design, estimating, and coordination of domestic water, hot water, sanitary drainage, stormwater, gas, and fire protection systems, strengthening the skills needed to collaborate remotely with U.S. engineering and construction firms. The program covers the complete workflow, from blueprint interpretation to quantity takeoffs on real-world projects, with a practical approach focused on remote work opportunities with international companies. Upon completion, students will be able to interpret complete construction drawings, identify all plumbing and fire protection systems, and perform accurate quantity takeoffs, expanding their career opportunities within the international construction industry.
REQUIREMENTS
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel).
- Familiarity with PDF markup software such as Bluebeam or PlanSwift.
- A university degree or final-year student status in Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field (preferred but not required).
OBJECTIVE
- To learn how to read and interpret plumbing, sanitary, and fire sprinkler drawings according to U.S. technical and drafting standards.
- Develop a solid understanding of domestic water, hot water, sanitary drainage, stormwater, and gas systems, including their components, applicable codes, and design principles.
- To learn how to perform professional quantity takeoffs and cost estimations using real-world construction projects while meeting the technical requirements of the North American market.

Alejandro Liévano
Architect, BIM Specialist, and Project Manager
Alejandro Liévano is a Colombian architect and project manager with more than a decade of experience leading multidisciplinary teams from conception through delivery. He has worked on a wide variety of projects and with diverse client profiles, providing consulting services. As Project Manager at Superior CS Group, Liévano oversees project planning, risk and performance management, workflow design, and coordination among clients, consultants, and construction teams. He currently manages a portfolio of projects and clients based in New York, ensuring compliance with design and construction standards in accordance with local and international regulations.
Before joining Superior CS Group, Liévano worked for seven years at Gustavo Perry Architects, where he was involved in large-scale residential projects—ranging from affordable housing to high-end urban developments—coordinating architectural, landscape, and MEP design within tight deadlines.
Early in his career, he gained experience at Tierratec as an assistant architect and collaborated with the Colombian Council for Sustainable Construction (CCCS) on the launch of the JMSD National Award for Social and Sustainable Housing.
He is an architect and urban planner who graduated from the National University of Colombia, where he wrote a thesis on Raizal Ethnic Housing for the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina.

Yes. After successfully completing all course activities, you’ll receive a The A Career Certificate validating your knowledge of reading, interpreting, and estimating plumbing projects according to U.S. industry standards.
What type of projects will I work on during the course?
You’ll perform quantity takeoffs using real U.S. construction drawings, identifying domestic water, hot water, sanitary drainage, stormwater, gas, and fire sprinkler systems.
What if I don’t have a university degree?
You can enroll even if you haven’t graduated, provided you have previous knowledge of blueprint reading or experience in construction, engineering, or related fields.
Is the course more theoretical or practical?
This is a 100% hands-on program. While you’ll learn the technical concepts and codes required to understand plumbing and fire protection systems, most of the course focuses on blueprint interpretation and quantity takeoffs using real construction projects.
What level of English do I need?
A B1 (Intermediate) level or higher is recommended to understand technical terminology, construction documents, and industry standards used by U.S. companies. You don’t need to be fluent, but functional reading comprehension is essential.
